UpState Hearing Instruments is working to make our website usable by everyone, including people with disabilities. This statement describes what we are doing, where we know we fall short, and how to reach us if you encounter a barrier.
Our Commitment
We serve patients living with hearing loss every day, and we understand that access is not a formality. We are committed to improving the accessibility of our website and to responding to feedback from anyone who has difficulty using it. If something on our site does not work for you, we want to hear about it and we will help you another way.
The Standard We Are Working Toward
We are working toward conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA and WCAG 2.2 Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium. These guidelines describe how to make web content more accessible to people with visual, auditory, cognitive, motor, and speech disabilities.
WCAG 2.1 Level AA is the most widely recognized benchmark for private business websites.
Current Status
We are reviewing and improving our website on an ongoing basis. Our current efforts include:
- Reviewing pages for keyboard navigation and visible focus indicators
- Providing descriptive alternative text for images
- Working toward adequate color contrast for text and interactive elements
- Using semantic HTML structure to support screen readers and assistive technologies
- Working toward clearly labeled form fields and descriptive error messages
- Working toward navigation and interaction that do not require a mouse
- Reviewing embedded content, such as video and maps, for accessible alternatives
- Providing captions for video content, and working toward accurate captions on all videos we publish
- Designing pages that remain readable when text is enlarged or zoomed
Known limitations. Some areas of the site may not yet conform to WCAG 2.1 or 2.2 Level AA. We are actively identifying and remediating barriers as we find them. We do not claim that the site is fully conformant.
Captions and Audio Content
Because many of the people we serve have hearing loss, we treat captions and transcripts as essential rather than optional. Any video we publish should carry accurate captions, not automatic captions alone. If you find a video on our site without captions, or with captions that are inaccurate or out of sync, please tell us and we will correct it.
If you would prefer a written transcript of any audio or video content on our site, contact us and we will provide one.
Accessibility Tool on This Site
Our site may include a third-party accessibility widget that lets you adjust display settings such as text size, color contrast, spacing, and cursor size. Where present, it is offered as a convenience, and any preferences you set may be stored on your device so they persist as you browse.
A tool of this kind is an aid, not a substitute for accessible design. We do not claim that it makes our site conformant with WCAG or compliant with any accessibility law. Tools of this kind cannot fix underlying accessibility problems in a website’s code or content, and we continue to work on the accessibility of the site itself rather than relying on a widget.
If the widget does not resolve a barrier you encounter, please contact us using the details below and we will help you directly.
Third-Party Content and Platforms
Our site uses third-party tools and integrations, including embedded maps, video, social media feeds, review displays, and forms. Some parts of our service run on separate platforms operated by other companies, including our online appointment scheduling portal.
We work to ensure our use of these tools does not create additional barriers, but we do not control their code and cannot guarantee their accessibility.
If you are unable to complete something on our site or on one of those platforms because of an accessibility barrier, contact us and we will help you complete it another way. That includes booking an appointment, requesting a callback, or asking a question by phone, by email, or in person at any of our five offices. You will not be disadvantaged for needing an alternative.
Alternative Ways to Reach Us
If any part of our website is not accessible to you, or if you need information in an alternative format, you can reach us in whichever way works best for you:
- Email: info@upstatehearing.com
- Phone: (530) 243-7307
- In person: at any of our five offices in Redding, Chico, Red Bluff, Susanville, and Weaverville
If the telephone is not a workable option for you, please use email or visit an office, and we will handle your request that way. You may also reach us by dialing 711 to connect through Telecommunications Relay Service.
Tell us what you were trying to do and what got in the way. We will respond as promptly as we reasonably can, and we will provide or arrange an accessible alternative where reasonably possible.
Accessibility in Our Offices
Accessibility does not stop at our website. If you need an accommodation for an appointment, tell us when you schedule and we will arrange it where we reasonably can. That includes written communication during your visit, extra time, or assistance with forms.
[VERIFY WITH CLIENT: confirm what each office can actually provide before publishing — wheelchair access and parking at each of the five locations, availability of assistive listening systems, and the process for arranging a sign language interpreter. Do not promise accommodations the offices cannot deliver.]
Assistive Technology Compatibility
We aim to make our website compatible with commonly used assistive technologies, including:
- Screen readers such as JAWS, NVDA, and VoiceOver
- Screen magnification software
- Keyboard-only navigation
- Speech recognition software
- Modern browsers with accessibility features enabled
Applicable Accessibility Laws
Accessibility for places of public accommodation is addressed under:
- Americans with Disabilities Act, Title III. Prohibits discrimination in places of public accommodation, which courts have extended to include websites.
- Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Applies to programs and providers receiving federal financial assistance.
- California Unruh Civil Rights Act. Prohibits discrimination by California businesses on the basis of disability. An ADA violation is generally also an Unruh violation under California law.
We are committed to meeting our obligations under applicable accessibility laws and working in good faith toward conformance.
Ongoing Efforts
Accessibility is a process rather than a finish line. We are committed to:
- Conducting periodic reviews using automated scanning tools and manual testing
- Remediating identified barriers on an ongoing basis
- Raising accessibility issues with our third-party providers
- Training our team on accessibility practices for content, design, and development
- Considering accessibility when updating or redesigning the site
Changes to This Statement
We will update this statement as we make progress and as standards evolve. The “Last Updated” date at the top reflects the most recent revision.
