What to Expect During a Hearing Test

In Blog by UpState Hearing Instruments

There’s something we say around here about hearing checks:

You regularly get your eyes checked.
You regularly get your teeth checked.
Don’t forget about your ears!

Preventative care is so important when it comes to hearing. Untreated hearing loss has been linked to memory loss, decrease in earning power, and social isolation. The sooner your loss can be treated, the sooner you can begin to rebuild connections and sustain your quality of life.

So what can you expect when you or a loved one comes into our office for a complimentary hearing test?

First, you can expect to be greeted in a warm environment by caring staff. Our front-office receptionist, Carole, loves working with people and will be happy to make you comfortable while we prepare for your hearing test.

We will discuss your history and lifestyle. This may give us a strong sense of what you are having difficulty with, and what you would like to improve in your hearing.

A visual examination will be done with safe, state-of-the-art equipment. We will take a look inside your ear for any obstructions.

Next, a range of hearing abilities will be assessed, taking place in a soundproof booth. The assessment will measure your ability to hear sounds at various frequencies and evaluate your ability to understand words in quiet and in noise.

We will thoroughly review and explain your results. If it is determined that you have hearing loss, don’t worry! Hearing aid technology is advanced; in some cases, you may be able to wear a hearing aid that is almost invisible outside your ear. The earlier hearing loss is treated, the easier the transition will be.

Sometimes hearing loss is more profound in one ear than another. It is also common to experience hearing loss of some tones but not others. We will answer any questions you have about your hearing evaluation.

If the results show that you could benefit from hearing instruments, we will demonstrate and explain them to you. We will discuss the best options for your hearing loss and your lifestyle. Independent hearing aid dispensers are able to offer the widest selection of hearing instruments at a variety of price ranges. You will be offered a complimentary two-week trial to allow you to wear hearing devices in your own environment. In order for you to make the best, most informed decision we feel it is imperative that you try them first.

You and a loved one will be invited to our Encore! class. This monthly class will allow you to meet with other new hearing aid users to learn communication strategies, discuss expectations, and review hearing aid successes. Follow-up care is essential to your hearing success.

Let us know if you have questions about visiting our office or receiving a hearing test. We want you to feel as comfortable as possible.
